Following several leaked photos over the weekend, Volkswagen has officially introduced the Golf VII Variant in Geneva.
The vehicle is based on the seventh-gen Golf hatchback and is up to 105 kg (232 lbs) lighter than the model it replaces, even though its wheelbase has grown from 2578mm (101.5 inches) to 2636mm (103.8 inches). Compared to the hatchback, the estate is 307mm (12.1 inches) longer and stands at 4562mm (179.6 inches) overall.
Thanks to the increased size, the 2013 Golf Variant boasts a 1054mm (41.5 inches) long cargo area which can be expanded to 1831mm (72.1 inches) once the rear seats are folded. Its load sill is 630mm (24.8 inches) tall and can store up to 605 liters if the seats are up. If they are down, cargo capacity grows to 1,620 liters.
Engines are carried over from the hatchback, with the direct-injection EA211 gasoline turbo available with 85 HP (62 kW), 90 HP (66 kW), 105 HP (77 kW), 122 HP (90 kW) and 140 HP (103 kW). The EA288 diesel is offered with 105 HP (77 kW), 110 HP (81 kW) and 150 HP (110 kW). The BlueMotion model has a 110 HP (81 kW) diesel linked to a 6-speed manual transmission which enables the Golf Variant to return 71.3 mpg US (85.6 mpg UK or 3.3 liters / 100 km) with CO2 emissions standing at 87 g/km.
Depending on the engine choice, Volkswagen offers five- and six-speed transmissions as well as the optional dual clutch DSG automatic gearbox.
